What is GST? Complete Guide to India's Tax System

Everything you need to know about GST — explained in simple terms by a certified GST Practitioner

Understanding GST (Goods and Services Tax) in India

Definition: GST (Goods and Services Tax) is India's unified indirect tax system that came into effect on 1st July 2017, replacing multiple taxes including VAT, Central Excise Duty, Service Tax, Entry Tax, Octroi, and Entertainment Tax. It is governed by the GST Council (chaired by the Union Finance Minister) and administered through the GST portal at gst.gov.in.

Before GST, businesses had to navigate different tax rates and compliance requirements in every state. A single product could attract 8-10 different taxes. GST simplified this into "One Nation, One Tax" — making it easier for businesses to operate across state borders while increasing tax compliance and transparency. In FY 2025-26, India's GST collections crossed ₹2 lakh crore per month (Source: CBIC, Government of India).

Types of GST — CGST, SGST, IGST Explained

GST in India has three components depending on whether the supply of goods or services is within a state or between states:

  • CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): Levied by the Central Government on intra-state (within same state) supply of goods and services. The revenue goes to the Central Government.
  • SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): Levied by the State Government on intra-state supply. The revenue goes to the respective state government.
  • IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): Levied by the Central Government on inter-state supply (between two different states) and imports. The revenue is shared between Central and State governments.

Example: If a dealer in Delhi sells goods worth ₹1,00,000 to a buyer in Delhi at 18% GST, the tax is split as ₹9,000 CGST + ₹9,000 SGST = ₹18,000 total GST. But if the same dealer sells to a buyer in Mumbai, the full ₹18,000 is charged as IGST.

Who Needs to Register for GST in India?

GST registration is mandatory for businesses meeting certain criteria. Understanding when you need a GST number is crucial for compliance:

  • Goods suppliers: Annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs (₹20 lakhs for North-Eastern and special category states)
  • Service providers: Annual turnover exceeds ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for North-Eastern and special category states)
  • Inter-state suppliers: Must register regardless of turnover if selling across state borders
  • E-commerce sellers: Anyone selling through platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, or their own online store
  • Casual taxable persons: Seasonal businesses or exhibition sellers
  • Input Tax Credit claimers: Businesses wanting to claim ITC on purchases
  • Agents and distributors: Supplying goods on behalf of other registered taxpayers

How to File GST Returns — GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9

GST return filing is done through the GST portal at gst.gov.in. After GST portal login, taxpayers need to file different returns based on their registration type:

ReturnWhat to FileFrequencyDue Date
GSTR-1Outward supplies (sales)Monthly / Quarterly11th of next month
GSTR-3BSummary return with tax paymentMonthly / Quarterly20th of next month
GSTR-9Annual returnAnnually31st December of next year
GSTR-4Composition scheme returnAnnually30th April
GSTR-10Final return (after cancellation)One-timeWithin 3 months of cancellation

What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

Input Tax Credit is one of the most important features of GST. It allows businesses to reduce the tax they have already paid on purchases (input) from the tax they need to pay on sales (output). This ensures that tax is levied only on the value added at each stage of the supply chain, eliminating the cascading effect of taxes.

For example, if a manufacturer purchases raw materials worth ₹1,00,000 and pays ₹18,000 GST (18%), and then sells the finished product for ₹1,50,000 charging ₹27,000 GST, they can claim ₹18,000 as ITC. The net GST payable would be ₹27,000 - ₹18,000 = ₹9,000.

GST Portal Login — How to Access gst.gov.in

The GST portal at gst.gov.in is the official platform for all GST activities. Here's how to complete your GST login:

  1. Visit www.gst.gov.in — always verify the official URL for security
  2. Click the "Login" button at the top right corner of the homepage
  3. Enter your Username (created during GST registration) and Password
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA verification and click Login
  5. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number — enter it to access your dashboard

HSN Code and SAC Code — What They Mean

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes are used for classifying goods under GST, while SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services. These codes are mandatory on GST invoices (also called GST bills):

  • Taxpayers with turnover above ₹5 crores: Must use 4-digit HSN codes on invoices
  • Taxpayers with turnover ₹1.5 to ₹5 crores: Must use 4-digit HSN codes (2-digit for B2C)
  • Taxpayers with turnover below ₹1.5 crores: HSN codes optional (but recommended)

Find the correct HSN/SAC code for your business in our complete HSN Code & SAC Code List with GST rates.

E-Way Bill and E-Invoicing

Two critical compliance requirements for GST-registered businesses are E-Way Bills and E-Invoicing:

  • E-Way Bill: Required for movement of goods worth more than ₹50,000 within a state (₹1,00,000 for inter-state). Must be generated on the e-way bill portal before transporting goods. Valid for 1 day per 200 km.
  • E-Invoicing: Mandatory for businesses with turnover above ₹5 crores. All B2B invoices must be registered on the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) and assigned an IRN (Invoice Reference Number).

Common GST Mistakes to Avoid

Based on my 15+ years of experience helping businesses with GST compliance, here are the most common mistakes that lead to penalties and notices:

  1. Late filing of GST returns — attracts ₹50/day late fee and 18% annual interest on tax due
  2. Wrong HSN/SAC codes — leads to incorrect tax rates and potential ITC mismatch
  3. Not reconciling GSTR-2B with purchase register — results in claiming ineligible ITC
  4. Mixing personal and business expenses — ITC cannot be claimed on personal use goods/services
  5. Not generating e-way bills — can result in goods seizure and penalty up to ₹25,000
  6. Filing GSTR-3B before GSTR-1 — causes data mismatch and potential scrutiny
